The Literacy Excellence Quality Mark …what is it and what does it stand for

Excellence in Literacy Programme

The Excellence in Literacy Quality Mark provides access to evidence-based approaches to the teaching of literacy, literacy intervention, professional development and ways of engaging the whole school community to ensure that every child achieves a literate future.

About Excellence in Literacy Quality Mark – Our Vision

The Excellence in Literacy Quality Mark, from the International Literacy Centre at the Institute of Education, London, aims to help schools improve the quality of literacy provision and literacy outcomes for all children. The self-evaluation framework seeks to be responsive to the character and individuality of schools in different contexts, whilst illustrating aspects of practice which successful schools have in common. Achieving the Excellence in Literacy quality mark indicates that a school is doing everything possible to foster literacy development.

Five inter-related areas of practice can be developed through self-evaluation for the quality mark:

  • A self-evaluation tool and an award process that will support communication with stakeholders and inspectors about effective provision mapping in schools which achieve  the award
  • Access to evidence-based programmes, current research and case studies of effective practice in literacy provision
  • Membership of a national online community of school leaders aiming to share practice, systems and professional development in literacy provision
  • A model of an auditing system which can be applied to other areas of school development
