The Excellence in Literacy Framework

The Excellence in Literacy self-evaluation framework supports the review of five connected areas of effective literacy provision.

Against each of the 5 areas of provision and 5 CLEAR strands, a school can evaluate literacy provision and outcomes and provide evidence and exemplification. Areas for development, which are identified during the self-evaluation process, can be addressed before making an application for verification of the award of Excellence in Literacy. There is no time frame imposed on the self-evaluation – a school may have effective practice in place in all areas and achieve the award quite quickly. Alternatively, the process may take longer and involve the development of new systems, support through professional development or re-organisation and evaluation of provision.

Each area incorporates five ‘CLEAR’ strands of regular activity in which schools will be engaged over regular cycles of review:

1.Communication      2. Leadership       3.Evidence-based decision-making                         4. Assessment and monitoring       5. Resourcing

Schools may freely use the Excellence in Literacy self-evaluation independently, to contribute to school development, or they may choose to apply for validation for the quality mark.
