About 50 school leaders and teachers heard about the Excellence in Literacy Quality Mark at a local launch event where discussion focused on two areas of the quality mark – providing high quality literacy intervention and ways of engaging parents and carers more fully in their children’s learning. One head teacher noted the potential to use the self-evaluation to help the school build on a recent positive Ofsted inspection by further enhancing practice.

Another head teacher was keen to involve middle managers working together as a team with the self-evaluation. Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders, Sue Tomalin and Elsa Steel outlined the benefits of literacy intervention, including early support through Reading Recovery, an evidence-based approach which ensures that struggling readers in KS1 catch up and keep up.
